YOUR WELLNESS RETREAT IN BC’S WHALE TERRITORY

This wellness-focused kayaking tour aims to deepen your connection with yourself, community, and the natural world. Through daily kayaking excursions, you will engage with nature in a way that fosters mindfulness, presence, and a sense of flow, helping you reconnect with yourself as you explore the beauty of the Johnstone Strait and Northern Vancouver Island.

Both land and camp-based activities further amplify these experiences through meaningful exercises designed to enhance self-awareness, foster connection with the group, and encourage a deeper relationship with the natural world. With ample time for reflection and movement, this getaway offers a balance of group interaction and personal introspection, helping you cultivate a deeper sense of harmony within and around you.

RECONNECT TO YOURSELF, COMMUNITY + THE NATURAL WORLD

Connection to Self: This kayak-centred tour, combined with nature-led well-being, offers an opportunity to explore your thoughts and emotions, deepen self-awareness, and nurture emotional balance.

The challenges and adventures of sea kayaking serve as a powerful metaphor for personal growth. Navigating unfamiliar waters and meeting obstacles with intention allows space for reflection and supports greater self-empowerment and resilience.

Connection to Community: While participating in guided meditation and movement, and by setting a personal intention for your experience, you are invited to explore your thoughts and feelings. This fosters a sense of community as you connect more deeply with yourself and, in turn, with others throughout this shared experience.

Connection to the Natural World: Witnessing magical encounters with wildlife, vibrant landscapes, and active participation in the natural world reminds us that we are not separate from nature, but an integral part of it.

Through water-focused mindfulness and nature-led well-being, your connection to the natural world is deepened with the intention of inspiring not only appreciation, but a lasting passion to preserve nature – during this retreat and for years to come.

OUR BASECAMP ACROSS FROM THE ROBSON BIGHT/MICHAEL BIGG ECOLOGICAL RESERVE

Built on a rocky bluff overlooking the Johnstone Strait, the camp offers generous outdoor space with unobstructed ocean views. Whether you’re seeking a quiet place to sunbathe, practice yoga, read, or simply take in the beauty around you, there are many peaceful spots to enjoy this intentional adventure when off the water. The camp also features a communal dining area and a comfortable, covered ocean-view lounge – perfect for restorative evenings – along with an oceanside hot tub.

Comfortable amenities include spacious walk-in tents set on wooden platforms, complete with comfortable beds and cozy linens. Each tent has a designated composting toilet, power for charging devices, and shared use of heated outdoor showers.

Things to note: Although our camp is well developed, it is on a remote island without access to typical infrastructure. There is limited WiFi and very limited cell service. We get electricity through solar panels and our water comes from a mountain spring – we do our best to manage them, but both can be limited by nature. While building our camp, we tried to be as low-impact on the environment as possible, so be aware that the paths may be uneven underfoot.

WHAT IS THE WELLNESS COMPONENT?

This kayak-focused adventure is intentionally designed to promote wellness through a holistic blend of nature-led well-being, water-focused movement, and meaningful connection. Daily kayak excursions immerse you in the natural beauty of the Johnstone Strait, complemented by land-based activities that encourage reflection and connection.

WILDLIFE

The Johnstone Strait has long been known for marine life. Marine mammals, including sea lions, orcas, humpbacks, dolphins, and porpoises, can often be spotted in the region. The shores of West Cracroft Island are rich in vibrant and unique intertidal life and we always keep an eye out for the variety of shorebirds and seabirds flying overhead. It’s not uncommon to witness a black bear foraging for crabs or a river otter or mink scampering along the shoreline.

FAQ

+ WHO WILL BE GUIDING THE WELLNESS ACTIVITIES?

All kayaking activities are led by our experienced guide team, while meditation, yoga, and mindfulness sessions are led by wellness expert Josephine, a yoga instructor and wellness professional with over 25 years of experience. Our entire team is trained to create a safe and welcoming environment, ensuring you feel comfortable and supported throughout your journey.

+ HOW MUCH TIME WILL BE SPENT KAYAKING VS ON RETREAT COMPONENTS?

Time spent kayaking will vary depending on the daily tour route (weather and sea state dependent) and the group’s abilities and desires. Generally, we travel between 4-6 hours a day in the kayaks, not including breaks and lunch. The first and last days of the retreat involve less time on the water due to the travel required to reach these special places and the time spent helping you settle in.

We create a daily plan that ensures we spend the desired amount of time kayaking while also integrating all the wellness elements of the retreat, such as group activities, personal reflection, and mindfulness practices. This allows for a balanced experience where you can connect with nature, engage in wellness exercises, and enjoy both the water and the retreat activities.

+ WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM THE WELLNESS SESSIONS AND ACTIVITIES?

In the wellness sessions and activities, you can expect a variety of experiences that integrate mindfulness, connection, and reflection— both on land, and water.

For example:

  • At Camp: You’ll have dedicated time for personal reflection and introspection through guided exercises, yoga, and meditation, helping to deepen your self-awareness and connection to your experience. Group activities may include reflective discussions designed to foster a sense of community and shared growth. These sessions provide opportunities for meaningful connection – with both yourself and others.
  • On the Water: While kayaking, or during breaks on land, you’ll be invited to practice mindfulness by focusing on your breath, the rhythm of paddling, and using your senses, creating a calm, present experience. Occasionally, you’ll stop for a moment of silence or do a brief reflection exercise on the water, taking in the surroundings to deepen your connection to both the environment and yourself.

Each activity is designed to be accessible and enjoyable, providing an opportunity for you to explore mindfulness, creativity, and self-awareness in a relaxed and supportive setting.

+ DO I NEED TO HAVE EXPERIENCE WITH MEDITATION OR MINDFULNESS TO PARTICIPATE?

No experience with meditation or mindfulness is required to participate. An open mind and a willingness to engage with curiosity are all that is needed. These practices are designed to be accessible to everyone, and our guides will walk you through the activities, ensuring you feel comfortable and supported as you explore them.

+ WILL THERE BE A CHANCE TO DISCUSS PERSONAL GOALS OR INTENTIONS FOR THE RETREAT?

Once your retreat is booked, you will receive an intention-setting package complete with journal prompts, allowing you to gain clarity on what your goals are related to self-discovery, personal reflection, and reconnecting with nature, giving the trip more focus.

Upon arrival at camp on Day 1 of your retreat, you will meet with your guide team and fellow guests in our beautiful handcrafted lounge overlooking the dramatic shores of Johnstone Strait. Once settled into this space, everyone in the group will have an opportunity to introduce themselves, share an intention or goal for the experience, and have any questions answered by your guides. Remember, they are there to help you get the most out of this rewarding, and special experience!

+ DO I NEED TO PARTICIPATE IN ALL OF THE ACTIVITIES OFFERED?

You are welcome to opt in or out of any activity during the retreat based on your personal preferences and comfort level. We create a daily plan that includes enough free time for relaxation and reflection, and you have the option to stay at camp for a morning or afternoon instead of kayaking.

This allows you to rest, enjoy personal time, or engage in self-directed exercises or activities. However, please note that this retreat is specially designed with a focus on self-discovery and group engagement, and we encourage participation in most of the activities being offered.

+ WHAT IS THE CAMP SET UP LIKE?

Set on top of a stunning bluff with sweeping views of the Johnstone Strait, this camp is the perfect spot to begin your adventure. This wilderness camp provides roomy walk-in tents, handmade bed frames with comfortable mattresses, fluffy pillows, linens, plush towels, private composting toilets located in a convenient central area, two hot showers, an ocean-front hot tub, and a covered dining and lounge area for you to enjoy gourmet meals and take in the sunset.

+ HOW MANY PEOPLE SLEEP IN EACH TENT?

These spacious tents are designed to fit two adults comfortably. Each tent contains two single beds that can be pushed together to make a king-size bed if you prefer.

Inside the tents, there are additional comforts such as extra blankets, a lamp, handmade bedside tables, electrical outlets, coat hooks, and headlamps.

Tents are based on double occupancy. We have a total of 8 guest tents at this camp. If you are travelling on your own, we do our best to accommodate solo tent requests, but they are limited, so please reach out to our office to confirm availability before reserving.

+ IS THERE CELL SERVICE OR ELECTRICITY AT THE CAMP?

Our camp sits just outside normal cell service areas, so you can enjoy your time with us free from digital distractions. If you need to find a signal to check in, you can find service as you paddle. In a pinch, we occasionally are able to provide (very limited and spotty) wifi.

We have a limited supply of electricity through solar panels and a battery bank at camp. When the weather is nice, we have more power; when it’s not, we have less. Everyone should be able to charge a camera battery at least once while on the trip and possibly more, but it’s wise to be conservative with your batteries to ensure the power is there when you need it (eg. avoid using the display unless you need it, don’t review photos in your tent at night, keep your camera off when not using it, etc.). We highly recommend bringing your own personal battery bank to use throughout your tour to ensure you are able to charge your devices.

+ CAN WE FISH FROM CAMP?

Unfortunately we are unable to fish from camp as this area is part of a Rockfish Conservation Area which makes it off-limits to all fishing.

+ ARE WE ALLOWED TO SPLIT OFF FROM THE GROUP OR PADDLE ON OUR OWN?

In the event of varying paces or interests, there is the possibility of splitting the group for specific routes. This would be at the discretion of our guide team, who are considering group needs and environmental conditions. Our guides are highly trained and well versed in managing group dynamics and expectations, and do their very best to ensure every guest is happy while adhering to on-water safety ratios. We kindly ask that you respect the decisions they are thoughtfully making throughout your trip.

While we recognize that many of our paddlers have personal experience and are eager for extra adventures, unfortunately for liability reasons and the nature of mixed- group travel, we cannot allow guests to be on the water without a guide present, or allow guests to ‘split off’ on their own entirely.
