Sea kayaking with killer whales - day 4

sea kayaking with killer whales, and bears- Day 4

As the sun struck our fleet of kayaks and we glimpsed the far side of the strait under the rapidly lifting layer of fog, we rounded a point to find a sight that will remain in our hearts forever. On the rocky beach immediately in front of us, oblivious of our presence, was a mother black bear working the beach with her two cubs. The youngsters trundled alongside their mother, methodically turning every rock and devouring the hidden bites of crab and eel. They were also frequently distracted by their game of tag on a nearby log. Although the sea life is not the bear's first choice food, they must resort to it in the late summer months with the decline of the wild berries.

We watched in wonder until the black trio made their way up into the trees with the little ones scrambling ahead. Then feeling luckier then ever, we turned our bows for home.

By the time we made it back to camp and had our pile of gear ready on the beach, the sun was high and the fog was gone. We all gathered on the point taking in the view for a last time and awaited the arrival of the 'Hi Flyer'

The 'Hi Flyer' appeared from around the point, it's back deck clustered with a new group of excited adventurers. On the beach another smooth exchange occurred. Gear was carried, group photos were taken, and the new group was greeted. But all the while a lump grew in our throats. We did not want to leave! And oh, how we envied the new group with their four full days ahead of them! Unfortunately reality could not be avoided and before we knew it we were chugging out of the bay, taking last photos and waving farewells.

Before long the majority of us had fallen into a peaceful slumber lulled by the movement of the boat and fulfilled by the previous days. Even the guides enjoyed these moments to peacefully snooze after giving their utmost energy to so successfully provide us with an exceptional holiday.

Although our return to civilization loomed ahead as the forested hillsides and rocky shoreline sped by, we knew our hearts would remain warmed and our spirits renewed after experiencing the killer whales world of harmony and beauty.
