Mothership packing list
Following is a list of recommended items to bring along
on the Mothership. We ask that you carry your belongings in soft carrying
bags or packs, as this is easiest to store on the boat. Each room has
a closet for your belongings. If you have any concerns or questions about
this list, feel free to call us at any time.
Foot wear while on board the Songhee - A pair of runners or comfortable
deck shoes.
Foot
wear while kayaking- wetshoes, sandals or rubber boots (we have a
supply available for rent)
Sun
or rain hat - A brimmed hat is ideal but a baseball cap will also
work.
Cool weather hat - A wool or fleece hat for the cooler weather
or evening stargazing is handy.
Sunglasses & sunscreen - A must for protection from sun and
glare off water. Safety cords are also a good idea.
Bathing
suit - Don't forget about the hot tub. (Note: we supply towels)
Waterproof
rain jacket
Waterproof
rain pants (optional)
Gloves
(optional) - When there is a cool breeze, the gloves come in handy.
Camera & film - In waterproof bag or case. You may use our
dry bags to store cameras.
Water
bottle - although there is water on board bring your bottle filled.
Personal
items - Toothbrush, toothpaste, toilet paper (for when you are out
in the wilderness), hand soap, shampoo, feminine hygiene products, hairbrush,
Medication (include labelled medication, bring extra for guide to carry
in case yours goes missing).
Reading
material - we will have a library of books on our local area on board.
Clothing
while on the Songhee - We suggest comfy lounging around clothing while
on board the Songhee. Nights and early mornings can be cool so a warm
sweater or fleece is handy for the stargazing evenings.
Clothing
while kayaking - should be suitable for the time of year bearing in
mind that it could become cold and wet at anytime of year. Layering is
the best way to regulate body temperature and maintain warmth. Avoid cotton
(except for those hot days). Cotton has no insulation value when wet.
An inner material that wicks moisture from the body and gives a comfortable
dry feeling even while wet is the best first layer (PolyPro, Lycra, Nylon,
Polyester). A synthetic material such as fleece or pile makes the best
second layer to provide warmth. Wool is also suitable. There is a dryer
onboard if clothing gets wet. You can check out our page on how
to dress for kayaking as it will show you some photos of what
you might look like.
Alcoholic
beverages - Although there is usually wine available, Spirit of the
West is not licensed to serve alcohol, so we suggest bringing your own
supply. You can purchase this in Port McNeils prior to meeting time or
you can call us to arrange this for you. If you are from USA, take note
that alcohol in Canada is more expensive, so you may want to bring some
from down there.
Sanitation while out in the wilderness
The kayak cuts no grooves and leaves no scars, as it travels freely through
the waters. However, on land, with the increasing number of kayakers venturing
into new territory and seeking the un-traveled path, we must respect our
surroundings and be aware of our impact on these environmentally sensitive
areas. Spirit of the West makes every effort to ensure we leave our area
as we found it. During our day tours away from the Songhee we will not
have the comfort of the on board toilet facilities. We will be making
stopovers on shore to relieve ourselves. Some areas may have pit toilets,
but generally not. In the event that toilet facilities are unavailable,
our guide will determine the most suitable location, as well as appropriate
method suitable for each areas environment. All sanitary products and
paper are taken out - this is where Ziploc plastic bags are handy. Sanitary
products can be wrapped in newspaper and placed in Ziploc.
