Day one cont'd
Back
at camp, some of us lazed on the warm rocks enjoying the view while others mingled
in the kitchen area enjoying hors d'oeuvres and chatting with the guides who cheerfully
busied themselves preparing our meal. Soon a stunning dinner of barbecued sockeye
salmon with baked new potatoes, fresh garden salad and lovely dinner rolls lay
before our eyes.
We
filled our well earned appetites until there was no room for more, then relaxed
on the rocks sipping wine and eating desert. Twilight descended on Johnstone Strait,
turning the western sky a flaming orange and the hills a subtle shade of pink.
Then the stars began to appear, sparkling pin pricks of light in an otherwise
darkened world
and with them, came the whales. Distant at first, but
growing louder with time. All night we heard them, their breaths mingling with
our dreams and their presence laying peace on our sleep.
