Day one cont'd

Our excitement rose as we rounded a corner and laid eyes on what was to be home for the next few days. The tents, each with their own stunning view, were dotted amongst the craggy pine trees that clung to the rocky point bathed in sunlight. On the beach stood the out going group of guests, spirits high from their refreshing stay, but sagging due to their impending departure.

The switch over was a smooth exchange of goods and folk and many shouts of greeting and farewell. We busied ourselves with carrying our gear up the forest path to the camp and before we knew it the 'Hi Flyer' was chugging out of the bay. After camp orientation, with the help of our guides, we each chose a suitable tent and made our selves at home. A beautiful gourmet lunch was enjoyed as we took in the spectacular scenery from this perfect natural viewing platform.

We were situated on West Cracroft Island on the edge of Johnstone Strait. Directly across from us was the world famous Robson Bight at the mouth of the Tsitika River, which is protected under the Robson Bight/Michael Bigg Ecological Reserve and provides the main summer congregation grounds for the Northern Resident Killer Whales.

With our appetites full and our dry bags packed we headed down to the beach to get ready for our kayak adventure. Following our thorough introduction to sea kayaking, and safety procedures, we launched our boats - some in singles, some in doubles,- and began our 'Paddling in the Realm of the Orca'.

It took us a few minutes to get used to our boats but the superbly crafted kayaks proved to be both comfortable and stable and before long we were effortlessly gliding over the shimmering water in our brightly coloured flotilla. We headed west into the lowering sun and made a loop around the small Boat Bay Island, pausing regularly to take in the view and let our cares drift away over the distant horizon. On the outer edge of the small rocky islet, we rafted together along side a large bed of bull kelp, before heading back to our tent village bathed in the evenings golden light

Bull kelp, being one of the largest kelps in the world, grows up to five and a half inches per day reaching a total length of up to 36 meters in its annual growing season. Apart from being an intricate part of the coastal ecosystem, it also provides a good anchor for kayakers when they feel like a break and don't want to drift too far.
