kayaking with killer whales - Day 4

Our last day arrived far sooner then our hearts desired. Outside our tents the morning felt hushed, as if saddened by our coming departure. We hesitated leaving the warmth of our sleeping bags, hoping we would miss the boat and escape our hectic city lives forever. But the familiar clank of the coffee pot lured us out to the morning, where we met a great surprise.

Our view was gone. In its place was a vast, white wall. At first it appeared an intrusion, but on second thought, it held a great beauty of its own. Hanging from every twig it obscured all but the nearest objects, back-dropping them with white and giving a new dimension to our surroundings. Sea fog, being a common phenomenon for the Johnston Strait area, rolls in off the open ocean with the cooling of the night, blanketing the coastline with a layer of white down, only to be burned off by the next day's heat.

By the time we had packed our personal belongings, ate our last breakfast and readied ourselves for our last paddle, the sun had already pushed some golden fingers through the shifting mist, striking individual trees and rocks.

With an exceptionally low tide, we paddled east along the Cracroft shoreline paying particular attention to the varied inter-tidal life, rarely exposed from its watery depths. Multi-legged Sunflower Stars clung to the rocks displaying their vibrant shades of orange and pink while clusters of smaller Purple Stars huddled in the rocky crevices. On the steeper rock faces gardens of Sea Anemones, Sea Urchins, Chitons, Whelks, and numerous seaweeds gave limitless opportunities for the inquisitive observer.
