kayak with orcas - Day 3
The
sun was still well above the horizon when we were comfortably back in
camp. Some of the braver souls went for a swim off the point in the
frigid northern waters while others enjoyed quiet, personal time. The
guides brought out the spotting scope and much to our delight, orcas
were soon spotted near the rubbing beaches.
Although
they could not be seen by the naked eye, through the scope they could be observed
taking turns at the beach over and over again just as described to us earlier
in the afternoon.
A final superb dinner was prepared for us, accompanied
by a delightful dessert of fruit salad dribbled with chocolate sauce.
The
wind calmed as the daylight waned and again the sky gave us a show of
colors before plunging us into darkness. A golden sliver of moon rose
above the tree tops and began its journey across the night sky. During
the night some orcaspassed our camp, their exhalations weaving between
our worlds of wakefulness and dream.
