The inside passage of Vancouver Island is home to a variety of sea birds, waterfowl and predator birds such as the Bald Eagle. One of our local sea birds, the Oyster Catcher, looks over daintily from its rocky nesting grounds. Oyster Catchers lay elliptical eggs so they simply roll in circles instead of rolling of a ledge where they've laid their eggs.

 

 

The Discovery Islands has it all ~ favorable weather, protected passageways, picturesque islets, lush forests, mountain views and First Nations history.

 

 

A group of Harbour Seals pop up to the surface to see what's happenin. Seals are very curious creatures, and it is not uncommon for these cute characters to follow behind our sea kayaks as we journey along.

 

 

Stellar Sea Lions, startlingly huge, out on a family adventure. The largest of the eared seals, the male Stellars can grow as long as 10 metres in length! What an awe inspiring sensation to view them from a sea kayak!

 

 

Evening coastal fog offers some fine entertainment, while you sip on a hot beverage as dinner is being prepared. The fog rolling through the forest shows the depth of the scenery, inspiring many local artists.

 

 

A Hermit Crab in it's temporary home ~ these creatures borrow and burrow in old shells. These little environmentalists are pro-reusing and take over the abandoned shells along the shore.
