Nuchatlitz Expedition Overview
Experience a true wilderness sea kayaking expedition on British Columbia's rugged and beautiful Pacific Coast. More remote than sea kayaking the Broken Group Islands on southern Vancouver Island, we access the majestic reaches of the Nuchatlitz Marine Park by water taxi from the isolated west coast town of Tahsis.
Once we've made it through the open sea to the confines of the Nuchatlitz park, we're ready for a voyage of discovery along remote beaches and coves, beside towering rock formations and sea caves, and sea kayaking through waters inhabited by a variety of sea creatures, from whales to sea otters, and everything in between. An additional highlight of these west coast tours are the magnificent sunsets.
"We can't imagine having better guides, constant informative talks on flora and fauna and Native peoples. We loved this trip." John and Nancy Nixon, USA
What we might see while kayaking
Whales, sea birds, sea lions, seals and sea otters can be seen at sea, while black bears, eagles, deer, and the occasional wolf or cougar can be observed on the shore.
This area is similiar in nature to the more familiar Broken Group Islands in Barkley Sound, but as remote and wild as it gets on Vancouver Island. While sea kayaking we also visit ancient First Nations villages of British Columbia that are slowly being absorbed by the even older forests that cover the coastline and islands that dot the region.
The sea otters of the Nuchatlitz
The Nuchatlitz is home to one of the largest sea otter populations on the West Coast of North America. Once hunted to extinction in this area, the sea otter was reintroduced in the late 1960's and is now thriving. They were dearly missed as there removal put the whole ecosystem of the area out of balance. Now with their return the area is thriving in ecological health once again. This is our 3rd trip with Spirit of the West, the guides, participants and areas paddled have been awesome. Sally and Gary Allen
