Surrounded by the towering snow capped Coast Mountains
and the lush evergreen slopes of East Redonda Island, Desolation Sound
is situated in a truly spectacular setting.
With its exceptionally warm waters and numerous islands, bays and lagoons,
it provides a perfectly pleasant sea kayak experience.
Leaving Campbell River in the late afternoon aboard our mothership,
the Columbia III, we head towards the awe inspiring beauty of Desolation
Sound leaving the cares of civilization behind.
Throughout our journey we use the Columbia III as our luxurious floating
home, planning each day around a kayak excursion and each night anchoring
in a new cove with a perfect view.
I'm
an English teacher and for the first time in a very long time I couldn't
think of any words to describe what I was seeing. It was that spectacular.

Taking
advantage of our kayak's silent maneuverability and shallow draft we
can explore every nook and cranny that captures our fancy while intimately
viewing the intertidal marine life and keeping our eyes open for marine
mammals and sea birds.
The possibilities for each day are infinitely varied and delightful.
Choices are made depending on our groups needs and desires. Usually
we launch our colourful kayak flotilla shortly after breakfast and enjoy
a mornings paddle before finding the perfect spot to relax and enjoy
a delicious homemade midday meal. Desolation Sound is known for its
many warm and sparkling fresh water lakes, often only a short stroll
through the forest from the sea, so lunch may be accompanied by a refreshing
swim.
The
afternoons will involve either more paddling, more swimming, a visit
to a harbour seal colony or maybe a snooze in the sun before we make
our way back to the Columbia III, awaiting us in a new location. In
this way no backtracking is necessary, instead we use our energy to
continually explore new areas.
Back on board our mothership (with the option of a hot shower!), we
begin our evening of gourmet food, conversation, conviviality and relaxation.
And if the conditions are right a night paddle is an option where the
truly astounding phenomenon of bioluminescence is experienced first
hand.
